Now is the time:

We are just $300,000 from beginning construction and opening the doors of the co-op this year. Now is the time. If you have been waiting to see how things turn out, now is the time to commit. If you've been saying "I'll join when they get close to opening", now is the time to join. If you've been saying "I want to invest in the co-op but $2000 is too much for my budget", you now have the opportunity to invest with as little at $200.

We all want to see the market opened by the end of the year -- and the Board is ready sign the commitment letter with Fidelity Bank for the $1.1 million loan in the next couple of weeks. But in order to do that, we need your help. Right now. Today.

If every owner buys just one $200 preferred share by June 1st, we can open the co-op this year.

Why invest with the co-op?

  • Preferred Shares will assist with and complement traditional bank financing by affirming the commitment of our owners and our community.

  • Our Preferred Shares pay you up to 5%* in annual dividends, which not only keeps profits within our community, but reduces the amount of loan interest paid to finance the construction and up-fit.

A Few More Details

The three main fundraising vehicles for Company Shops Market are selling ownership shares, gaining participation in the Community Investment Note Program and selling Preferred Shares. Both categories of money are considered equity and will strengthen our financial position, giving us more financial power and flexibility, and enabling us to secure bank financing.

The Co-op has already raised in excess of $500,000 through the Community Investment Notes Program. We will need to raise at least $300,000 additional dollars (for a total of $800,000) through the sale of preferred shares or community investment notes. We have secured a $1.1 million bank loan from Fidelity Bank for the remaining balance. This will allow us to confidently move into the design and up-fit phase of this project and will ensure strong cash flow for store operations.

Preferred Shares are a financial vehicle for North Carolina residents that are owners of Company Shops Market to make investments directly in Company Shops Market.
These Notes are an instrumental part of the continued financing of Company Shops Market.

Preferred Shares are an investment opportunity created by Company Shops Market to efficiently channel local investment into an economically, socially, and environmentally responsible business. Preferred Shares pay a possibly below-market rate of dividend, determined at the time the investment is made.

The proceeds from the sale of Preferred Shares will be used to fund the renovation, upfit, opening, and operation of Company Shops Market at the building owned by Company Shops Market at 268 East Front Street, Burlington, North Carolina.

  • Preferred Shares are offered for $200.00 per share with the following maximum base dividend rates and minimum purchase as follows:
    0% $200.00 minimum purchase (1 shares)
    1% $2,000.00 minimum purchase (10 shares)
    2% $2,000.00 minimum purchase (10 shares)
    4% $2,000.00 minimum purchase (10 shares)
    5% $20,000.00 minimum purchase (100 shares)

  • Preferred Shares are not FDIC insured.

  • Preferred Shares are not tax-deductible. You are required to pay income tax on dividends earned.

  • Preferred Shares are only available to North Carolina residents who are owners of Company Shops Market.
