Nate Perry, Rusty Holt and Bob Hykes meet at the Co-op building last week to determine how the ceiling tiles could be removed. After some discussion, we feel that the project is ready to go forward and can be accomplished by a skilled and dedicated volunteer force.

(Nate Perry inspecting the ceiling tiles. For the actual removal, proper protective gear is essential. Long sleeves, long pants, closed-toed shoes, heavy work gloves and eye protection. Protective ear plugs and a dust mask are also suggested)
Demolition Begins This Weekend!
We sent out an email this afternoon calling for interested volunteers to sign up and help us get this project started. We will have 4 hour shifts available this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Oct 16-18, 2009). Visit the Ceiling Demolition Party Page for full details on how to volunteer and what to expect.
Your Questions Answered!
We have already had a few questions from our owners….
Q: Did you make sure that the ceiling tiles are asbestos free? Has an analysis of the ceiling tile material been performed?
A: Yes, if you look towards to the bottom of the email or the Ceiling Demolition Party Page, you will see a paragraph that reads:
Tests NEGATIVE for Lead Paint and Asbestos: We had the paint on the tiles tested for lead and the tests came back negative. We tested the loose insulation above the ceiling tiles for asbestos and the tests came back negative. To the best of our knowledge, the paint and insulation are lead and asbestos free. But we do suggest that proper respiratory protection be used at all times on the job site.
Q: What will be done with the tiles? If you want to recycle them, I would be interested in them.
A: We plan to sell any salvaged tiles and recycle the damaged tiles, if at all possible.
Our first priority is the safe and expeditious removal of the ceiling tiles. It is our intention to salvage as many tiles as possible but keep this in mind…. Each of the tiles are attached to a wooden framework with multiple 1.5″ long nails. It may prove difficult to remove the tiles without damaging them.
Any tiles that are salvaged, will be offered for sale at the Nov 7th “Beer and Brats Novemberfest” Event. A number of individuals have already expressed interest in obtaining some of the salvaged ceiling tiles. Unfortunately, we won’t know how many of them will be available due to the difficulty in removing them without significant damage.
We are currently investigating opportunities to recycle any tiles that are too damaged to salvage and resell.
We will resell and recycle as much as possible.
