Cities receive grant to revitalize downtown businesses” say’s News 14 Carolina. Governor Bev Perdue spoke in Burlington today, announcing the $298,000 Main Street Solutions grant that is being awarded to Burlington for use in renovation of the future home of Company Shops Market.

From the News 14 website:

Those who live in Burlington quite often travel out of town for their shopping needs, but pretty soon that’s going to change thanks to an upcoming and innovative downtown business.

“This project will help us see things flow and expand into the rest of downtown,” said Burlington Downtown Corporation Director Anne Morris.

Gov. Bev Perdue announced the city is one of just a few in the state to receive a Main Street Solutions Grant to help revitalize downtown business. “I really do I believe this little investment in our tax dollars in something that’s already happening here in Burlington,” said Perdue. “It is a really important spark to rekindle the partnership between the state and this community.”

The $300,000 is being used to help get the ball rolling on the Company Shops Market Grocery Cooperative, a soon to be 7,000-square foot natural food store that will offer fresh meat and produce with a focus on locally grown, made and packaged products…..

Boardmember Eric Henry says:  “This a game changer for our community and will push us over the finish line to get our co-op grocery store opened, but this still does not diminish the need for more owners and investors in order to reduce the amount we need to borrow from the bank. Thanks for everyone’s support!”

CSM owner Susan Kern says: “I want to offer thanks to all the folks on the board who have worked so hard for years on this. I am thrilled for you all AND for us!”

Sarah Cook, CSM’s Marketing & Communications Manager says: “I’m so excited my feet are dancing! You better dust off your hard hats because I think this means construction will be starting soon. A HUGE amount of work went on behind the scenes to put together this grant proposal and to take it through the decision process.  I feel a great big debt of gratitude for the efforts of Company Shops Market’s past and current board members, Anne Morris of the Burlington Downtown Corporation, and the many others I probably don’t even now about who pulled together to make this happen. Thank you. And thank you to Bev Perdue and the State of North Carolina for using the Main Street Solutions Fund to support locally-owned small businesses and to promote the revitalization of North Carolina’s historic small towns ”

Elon University plans bus route with access to Company Shops Market

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

According to yesterday’s article in the Times-News, Elon is planning to test a new bus route this spring.  This would give easy access to travel between Elon and the Company Shops Market building. The article says “The bus will make six stops there [Burlington] hourly between 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. weekdays.” One of the six proposed stops is South Spring Street downtown, which is easy walking distance to Company Shops. And the article says “The general public can also use the shuttle.”

Board president Sharon Dent says, “This is good.  Maybe they’ll even start running a route downtown on Saturday afternoons to the co-op for shopping [once the market opens].”

The Times-News ran a story in today’s paper on Michael Shuman’s visit to the Company Shops Market building. Shuman was quoted as saying that CSM “will be a great gravitational pull to the downtown area”.

Economist gives advice to co-op

A nationally known economist said that a proposed grocery co-op set to locate in downtown Burlington could be an attraction the area has sought for nearly three decades. Michael Shuman, author of “The Small-Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses are Beating the Global Competition” stopped by the Company Shops Market site during a tour of Alamance County on Friday…..” Read the full article here

Michael Shuman coming to Company Shops Market tomorrow.

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Michael Shuman, economist & author of “The Small-Mart Revolution” will tour Alamance County on Friday, Oct. 30th. Including a stop in Burlington to visit Company Shops Market and to speak with Anne Morris of Downtown Corporation.

News of the event made it into The Times News yesterday. You can read “Author will speak on the importance of local businesses” in the TheTimesNews.com website.

“There’s a growing body of evidence that locally owned businesses deliver two to four times the economic development benefits — in terms of income effects, jobs, and taxes — than do non-local businesses like chain stores or branch factories. Revitalizing town centers with local businesses … is an effective strategy for stimulating depressed economies across the United States,” Shuman said Wednesday.

Michael Shulman will speak at Elon University on Friday afternoon and in Durham on Friday night.

If you want to see Michael Shulman speak, they are still allowing registration!

2009-10-30_ElonUniversity_FallEnvironmentalForumHe will be participating in a “Principles of Sustainability – Good business practice” panel discussion from 1pm-2pm at Elon University tomorrow (Friday Oct 30th).

Elon University is holding it’s 8th annual fall environmental forum this Friday and Saturday. This year’s focus is on sustainability in business. The forum will take place on Friday, with two tours scheduled to the Proximity Hotel and a New London farm where T.S. Designs in Burlington sources cotton for its North Carolina-made shirts.
