Volunteer Shout-Out: Novemberfest

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Company Shops Market thanks the following for a great time @ Novemberfest

Thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed the party. With over 500 attendees, it was literally and figuratively a huge success. As you can probably guess, it takes quite a bit of work to pull off an event of this size and scope. Luckily we had a lot of help. As board president Sharon Dent likes to say, “it takes a village.”

Special Thanks to:

  • Liz Ross & Band, SOS, and Todd Sines for the audio setup and great live music.
  • Red Oak Brewery, Cane Creek Farm, 9th St Bakery, G3 Sauce, Satisfy Your Soul, Counter Culture Coffee, Zack’s and Redbud Farm for the great local food.
  • TS Designs, Saxapahaw General Store, Danny’s Cafe,  and Bella’s House for volunteering the use of their chairs, ovens, cookers, lights, and more.
  • Burlington Police for making sure everyone at the event was safe and secure.
  • Meredith Gulley for the lovely video.
  • Volunteers Eliza Sydnor, Charles Sydnor, and Ross Flynn for preparing the brats and burgers.
  • Volunteers Eric Michel of TS Designs, JT Sharpe of J&L Bicycle, Nate Perry, Sharon Dent, Sarah Cook, Robin Showerman & Family of Bella’s House, Rusty Holt, Sam Moore, Tom Sineath, Megan Squire, Tony Crider, Matt Heidel, Eric Henry, Bob Hykes, Patrick Harmon, Caroline Ansbacher, Jan Henry, Jack Martin, Kevin Helsey for working behind the scenes to build stages, create rolling partitions, decorate, clean, set-up, run errands, and for handling the many small details that make an event like this run smoothly.

We know there are many others ………………if you got left out please let us know so we can add your name to the list.

Work Night: Stage built for Nov. 7th Beer & Brats Novemberfest

Monday, October 26th, 2009

This evening a few volunteers got together for an impromptu work session to build a stage for our upcoming Beer & Brats Novemberfest event. Thank you Eric Michel of TS Designs, JT of J&L Bicycle and our very own Nate of Company Shops Market.

These guys offered their time and talent to put together a 12ft x 16ft platform for Lizzy Ross and her band to play on at our Nov 7th event. All of the lumber used in the construction of the stage comes from wood that was salvaged by volunteers during the October Weekend Work Party.

Weekend Work Party – Day 1 (Friday)

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Friday night’s objective was to tear down the corner office while salvaging as many usable materials as possible.

Thank you to Matt Heidel, Bob Held, Paul Bogdan, Bill Dunn, Kevin Helvey, Eric Michel, Sharon Dent, Greg Frazier, and Nate Perry for spending their Friday evening working to bring the co-op one step closer to opening our doors for business.

Steps were taken to salvage the windows, door, paneling and lumber for use in future projects:

Ceiling Demolition Postponed! Co-op Work Weekend Still Happening

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Ceiling Demolition Has Been Postponed!
We have a bit of bad news.  We met with the Burlington Fire Department and with our current sprinkler system contractor.  They were quite nice, gracious, and supportive of our efforts, but after discussing our short and mid term goals, we have determined that it would be in the co-op’s best interest to wait until just before the beginning of the official roof renovation to remove the tiles. That way we won’t have to pay our sprinkler system contractor to have the lower sprinklers capped off (a requirement for removing the ceiling tiles). If we time the ceiling tile removal to happen just before construction starts on the roof, we save the added expense because the sprinkler system will be replaced around that time anyway.

But we are still having a work party this weekend
It’s a bummer, we know, but we still have plenty of other demo and general housekeeping projects left to do. So the show will go on, but we will be leaving the tiles up until a little later.  The tile demolition party will happen eventually, but has been officially postponed.  We still look forward to seeing anyone still interested in coming down, there’s still plenty to keep us occupied.

Hope to see you there.
